Caring For The Caregiver

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. ~ Hebrews 13:2

David's Refuge Caring For The Caregiver

David Pfohl
David Pfohl - Senior Portrait
The man stood in front of the congregation that Sunday morning and shared with us the story of his son David, who after battling a rare, progressive and incurable disease for 13 years, passed away in the fall of 2009.  I listened intently as Warren Pfohl talked about the no-profit respite for caregivers of special needs children that he and his wife Brenda started in their home in honor of their son.   They received so much encouragement and support during the time that they had cared for David that they knew they wanted to reach out to other couples with kids who have special needs or life threatening medical conditions. They decided to create a bed & breakfast in the wing of their home, that had originally been built for David, and offer stays of up to two nights to these caregivers at no cost to the couples.

Warren shared how wonderful it was to come alongside these weary, dedicated couples, to hear their stories, and to offer them a place to relax and rejuvenate as they encouraged them and let them know that they are loved and are not alone. The problem was that demand was greater than their supply! There were so many couples that their bed and breakfast with one guest room just couldn't accommodate them all.

And that was why he was at Grace Chapel that morning telling us about David's Refuge.  They were looking for others who might want to partner with them in various ways. As Warren talked I could feel myself getting more and more excited until it was nearly impossible for me to stay in my seat and not jump up and down, waving my hands in the air shouting, "We have a bed & breakfast!  We could offer our rooms!"

At the end of the service I made my way to the foyer and walked to the table where Warren & Brenda stood sharing pamphlets and other information about David's Refuge. I was so overcome by emotion that I could barely speak and honestly I do not remember exactly the conversation that we had but I do remember telling them how touched I was by their story and what they were doing and that we had a bed & breakfast in Auburn and that I would love to know more about how we might be involved.

As I left church that morning I was still having trouble keeping it together!  I was excited and so moved by what the Pfohl's were doing and I believed God wanted us to be a part of it.

later that week I spoke with Warren on the phone and we set up a meeting.  My husband Rodney and I invited the Pfohl's to come to 10 Fitch and spend the night in one of our suites.  We enjoyed a wonderful dinner together at Oak & Vine restaurant and talked while we ate and then talked some more when we returned to the inn.  It did take a few months to get everything in order but finally in November 2013 we hosted our first David's Refuge at 10 Fitch.  We have hosted five more since and have two more on the books for later this year. All three of our suites are occupied by David's Refuge couples at one time making the atmosphere ideal for them to share their experiences, joys and the challenges of raising a special needs child because they have exclusive use of the inn and complete privacy while they are here.

As part of their stay at 10 Fitch, David's Refuge couples receive a $50 dinner voucher provided by Oak & Vine restaurant where they can enjoy a delicious, quiet dinner together in beautiful surroundings.  They may also enjoy a massage right here at 10 Fitch or a mani or pedicure offsite during their stay. We also offer them our candlelight, rose petal turn-down service and a romantic board game to enjoy here and take home, compliments of 10 Fitch.

4.27.14 "This has been the best weekend ever for us - better than our honeymoon! Thank you so much for your hospitality, delicious food, exquisite room, and impeccable home.  Thank you 10 Fitch & David's Refuge!" Rob & Dana Bisnett

We have been incredibly blessed to be a part of what David's Refuge is doing.  The couples who have shared their stories and pictures of their children with us have touched our hearts forever.  These are amazing parents and caregivers! We have been so happy to serve them and love on them during their brief stays.
