August 15th - Guided Shorebird-Viewing Walk. Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, 3395 U.S. Route 20 East, Seneca Falls, New York 13148. As summer flies by, so do the shorebirds that use the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge as a stopping point during their migration. Throughout the months of August and September, certain species of those little birds you’re used to seeing along the coast will stop to rest and feed in the prime habitats created at Montezuma. Thanks to local birding experts, you are able to get a close view of these birds through the refuge’s annual Guided Shorebird Walk series. All tours will start at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center (3395 U.S. Route 20 East, Seneca Falls, NY 13148) and guests will carpool/caravan to the viewing sites. Some moderately-difficult walking and significant time out in the sun will occur, so please come prepared with water and sunscreen. Guided by Steve and Linda Benedict of the Eaton Birding Society. 8:00 am. Andrea_VanBeusichem@fws.gov. 315-568-5987, ext. 228

August 21st & 22nd - Wine Symposium of the Finger Lakes, Geneva, NY
2015 WINE SYMPOSIUM OF THE FINGER LAKES An event celebrating the excellence of Finger Lakes wines and wineries New York was selected this year by Wine Enthusiast magazine as the world's top wine region and its wines are increasingly being recognized for their excellence.
The third annual Wine Symposium of the Finger Lakes, which is scheduled for August 21-22 in Geneva, New York, is intended to celebrate the growth and success of the Finger Lakes' wine industry, and help build on that energy to keep the local industry moving forward.
The event lineup includes a Grand Tasting on August 21 at Geneva's lakefront Visitors Center during which the winners of the 2015 Finger Lakes AVA Riesling Challenge will be announced. The Riesling Challenge is a signature event of the Symposium, when some of the area's top winemakers judge the Rieslings in six classes. The Rieslings also will be available for attendees to sample at the Grand Tasting.
This year, tickets will be sold on an a-la-carte basis, instead of a one-price full package basis, allowing attendees to pick the seminars and events that interest them most. Symposium events on August 22 will include an opening session with a panel of wine experts followed by seminars aimed at giving wine enthusiasts a better understanding of the offerings of the Finger Lakes Wine region.
The event continues on Saturday with Winemakers Lunches hosted at downtown Geneva restaurant venues, and a "Red, White and Blues" street tasting on Linden Street where wineries are invited to pour a vinifera red and a vinifera white wine or sparkling wine at 6pm.
The goal is to let people know that the Finger Lakes wine industry is not only thriving but has really attained a magnificent stature among world wine regions. The Wine Symposium spotlights that stature, and invites more people to be a part of the celebration. Admission: For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.winesymposiumfingerlakes.com.
